After 240 years, the Nepalese monarchy was abolished in May 2008, making Nepal a republic, in the first act of the new constituent assembly formed after the Maoists won the elections in April.

The former King Gyanendra was given two weeks to vacate the palace.  The royal flag was lowered and the royal insignia removed from the palace gates.  References to royalty were removed from public life, the former 'Royal Nepalese Army' becomes simply 'The Nepalese Army', and the National Anthem is being rewritten.
