Ghoti Khola MHP Update

The villagers of the Ghoti Khola area are eagerly waiting for the winter to pass so they can continue with the work on the Micro Hydro project.

The Ghoti Khola micro hydro project is the largest ever to be built in Humla, with a 50kW electric generator aiming to bring energy to 4,500 people across three villages. Ghoti is a remote and troubled area that was very much affected by Nepal's long and destructive insurgency. After many years of delay to the project, everyone is delighted that the work is now underway.

Following months of the villagers' work to clear the land, in November, the first fleet of helicopters arrived to deliver equipment. All the villagers turned out to witness the arrival of the first helicopter.

With winter now set in, the villagers are waiting for the spring to be able to continue with the work. Engineers from Kathmandu as well as Nepal Trust volunteers and staff will join the villagers in the work. If all goes to plan, the villagers should receive electricity by the end of the summer.

The project is jointly funded by Rotary International in Britain & Ireland (RIBI) and AEPC / DANIDA - the Government's rural electrification programme, and by the local villages involved.
