Education & LiteracyIn an area with little communication with the outside world, where few people can read and write, education is key to improving the life chances of the individual and of the community.
Our ‘Little Doctors’ programme teaches hygiene and basic first aid to schoolchildren. The children take the messages back to their families, improving levels of sanitation and health at grassroots level.
As few as 1 in 10 adult women in Humla can read. As primary carers, women have responsibility for the health of their families. Studies have shown that a child with a literate mother has a higher chance of survival than one without. Our women's literacy programmes empower women and help them care for their families.
In the future, water will become ever more important to world economies, and it's something that Humla has in abundance. The Nepal Trust is working with a leading biologist and environmental educator to pioneer the 'Watershed Action Through Education & Research' (WATER) programme to help local communities manage, utilise and conserve this vital resource.
