Shangri-La and the 'Hidden Himalayas'The upper Karnali River zone in North-West Nepal is one of the poorest in the world. With no roads and little communication with the outside world, parts of this area can take up to a week to reach on foot. Little wonder that most NGOs quickly give up when faced with the difficulties of even accessing this area, let alone providing support to the people that need it most. Tourism is one of the biggest industries in Nepal, millions of Westerners visit the country every year. But the vast majority will never travel beyond the honeypots of the Kathmandu Valley, Annapurna, Pokara and the Everest region. Few will take the challenge of travelling in this remote region, but if they would, they could be lucky enough to experience the mythical Shangri-la.
Shangri-la, or 'Shambhala' in Tibetan mythology is believed to be a kingdom hidden deep in the mountains around Humla, a place of peace, tranqulity and happiness, where all the inhabitants are enlightened and the people live without war or famine. Some say that Shambhala is a physical place, others believe that it is a state of being, which one may attain by spending time in this beautiful and remote area.
