Eco-tourism & Business Development

Tourism is the third largest source of income to Nepal.  However, the limited infrastructure and communications make it difficult for many people to consider going beyond the honeypot areas of the Kathmandu Valley, and the Everest and Annapurna regions.

The Nepal Trust is uniquely placed to be able to offer Western travellers an insight into the culture of remote Nepalese communities through our history of working within the area, providing development solutions.  Indeed, tourism is the vehicle through which the Nepal Trust originally started its community projects.

Now, thirteen years on from that first trek, we have established a trusted team of skilled local facilitators and have built our own guest house in Simikot, also used as a secondary office.  Our eco-tourism initiative in Humla was developed in collaboration with UNESCO.

With every project we work on, we offer you the opportunity to trek with us, to actively participate in the work, learning skills, sharing cultures and making new friendships.  It is tremendously satisfying to work alongside a Nepalese villager, helping to build a health clinic, or install solar panels which will make such a positive enhancement to the life of the community.  More about treks.

The treks provide a good source of income to communities in Humla, as we source the majority of our trekking resources (food, manpower, pack animals, etc) directly from the local area.

We encourage communities to provide services for trekkers, such as small shops and campsites, or signposting the local hot springs, a welcome treat for tired Western legs!
